Beeston has a wider spread of housing than most of the towns we cover. Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the town centre and the station, interwar semis out towards Bramcote and Chilwell, post-war estates, and a large student rental population around the University Boulevard side that puts a lot of wear on boundaries and gates.
The thing that comes up here more than anywhere else is the brick wall. A lot of Beeston boundaries are old walls — sound, but low. They were built when the standard was to mark a boundary rather than screen a garden, and they leave a patio overlooked.

Rebuilding a wall higher means foundations, mortar, and a bricklayer. Fencing above it means posts fixed to the wall and panels on top, and it can usually be done in a day without touching the brickwork or the paving beside it. The before and after above is exactly that job.
Three things decide whether it will work. The wall has to be sound — a wall with movement in it will not hold posts under wind load, and a fence is a sail. The fixings have to suit the brick, which is a judgement made on site rather than from a photo. And the combined height has to be legal, which is where most people get caught out.
The height arithmetic
Fence height is measured from ground level, not from the top of the wall. So a 900mm wall with a 1.2 metre panel on top is a 2.1 metre boundary — over the 2 metre permitted development limit, even though the fence itself is well under it.
On a boundary fronting a highway, where the limit is 1 metre, almost any wall-top fence will exceed it. That does not mean it cannot be done, only that it may need permission first. Broxtowe Borough Council's planning team will confirm your position at no cost, and we would rather you asked than found out afterwards. We are not planning consultants.

Broxtowe runs its garden waste differently to most of its neighbours, and slightly better. A 6ft panel is over the single-item limit on its own.

It depends on the brick and the mortar, which is why it is a decision made on site rather than from a photograph. Older soft brick and lime mortar behave differently to modern brick and cement, and the fixing has to suit what is actually there. If the wall will not take a fixing safely we will tell you, rather than fit something that will not hold.
