Before & after in Chilwell

An Overgrown Chilwell Garden Cleared and Fenced

Some boundaries cannot be quoted until the garden around them can be reached. This one had not been touched in years — brambles over the old fence line, rubbish underneath it, and no way of knowing what state the posts were in until it was cleared.

Full garden clearance, then a new boundary

An overgrown Chilwell garden with brambles, dense undergrowth and dumped materials covering the old fence line Before
Waist-high growth across the whole plot with the boundary buried inside it. Jobs like this get quoted in two parts for a reason: until the line is exposed, nobody can honestly say whether the posts are reusable or how much fence is actually there.
The same Chilwell garden cleared to bare soil with a new fence on concrete posts and gravel boards along the boundary After
Cleared to soil, waste removed under our waste carrier licence CBDU474286, and a new boundary on concrete posts with gravel boards. Doing both in one visit means one set of access arrangements and one lot of muck away, rather than two trades and two skips.

Fencing and Gates in Chilwell

Chilwell runs from the older properties along Chilwell High Road out through the interwar and postwar estates toward Toton and Attenborough, with newer development filling in around the tram line. Gardens are mostly a decent size, boundaries are long, and a fair number of them are shared with three or four neighbours rather than one.

We fit the full range here — closeboard on concrete posts with rock-faced gravel boards is the standard, and anthracite grey composite has become the common upgrade on rear boundaries where nobody wants to be re-treating timber every other summer. Side gates and wooden driveway gates are made to the opening in our own workshop.

Supplied and fitted or supply only, whichever suits.

What We Install in Chilwell

When the Garden Has to Be Cleared First

A meaningful share of our Chilwell work starts as a clearance rather than a fence. Probate properties, rentals coming back after a long tenancy, and gardens that simply got away from someone all land in the same place: the boundary needs replacing and nobody can get to it.

How we price that honestly:

  • Clearance is quoted on volume and access, not on the size of the garden. What matters is how much comes out and whether it can be carried to a vehicle.
  • The fence is quoted properly once the line is exposed. We will give you a realistic range beforehand, but anyone giving you a firm panel-by-panel price for a boundary they cannot see is guessing.
  • Both together saves a visit. One mobilisation, one lot of waste away, one set of neighbour arrangements.

We are a registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286, so everything that leaves goes to a licensed facility with the paperwork behind it. That matters more on a clearance than on a fence — it is your household waste, and if it turns up fly-tipped it can be traced back to the address it came from. See garden clearance for what we can and cannot take.

Getting Rid of an Old Fence in Chilwell

Chilwell is in Broxtowe Borough, and like the rest of the county the brown bin is a paid service that will not help you anyway.

Broxtowe's garden waste subscription runs at around £45 for the first bin and £26 for a second, fortnightly from March to November and monthly from December to February. It is a better service than several neighbouring boroughs. It still will not take fence panels — treated timber is not garden waste.

Your tip is Beeston Recycling Centre, Lilac Grove, NG9 1PF, run by Nottinghamshire County Council. You must register your vehicle in advance — up to two per household — and a hire van needs arranging at least 24 hours ahead with the hire agreement brought with you.

The bit that catches people out

Nottinghamshire's DIY waste limit is two 50-litre bags, or a single item no larger than 2000mm × 750mm × 700mm, per visit, with four visits per household in any four-week period. A cleared garden is many times that, and a 6ft fence panel exceeds the single-item limit on its own.

Nottinghamshire County Council also states that where waste has come from work carried out by a tradesperson, disposing of it is that tradesperson's responsibility, not yours. A clearance quote that does not include disposal is not a clearance quote.

Fence Heights and Permission

Permitted development generally allows 2 metres at a rear or side boundary and 1 metre where a boundary fronts a highway, including a footpath beside a road. Trellis counts toward the total height, which catches people out on a boundary that is already at the limit.

Covenants on newer developments around Toton and the tram line can be stricter than planning law — some estates restrict boundary treatments at the front entirely. Check your deeds as well as the planning position. Broxtowe Borough Council's planning team will confirm the planning side free of charge; we are not planning consultants.

Why Choose Nottingham Fencing

We are a local, family-run firm run by founders Adam and Stephen, based on Beechdale Road with over 15 years' experience across Nottingham and the county. Chilwell is a regular part of our week, and because we clear as well as fence, an overgrown boundary is one phone call rather than two.

  • The old fence goes with us. Registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286 — removal and disposal handled properly, nothing left on your drive.
  • Measured before it is priced. The free survey is where we check post centres, ground levels and whether existing bases can be reused — which is what stops a price changing halfway through.
  • Made to measure, not cut down. Gates are built to your opening rather than trimmed from a stock size, so they still swing properly a year later.
  • Supply only if you want it. Happy to just sell you panels, posts, gravel boards and trellis if you are fitting it yourself.
  • Insured and guaranteed. Public liability insurance in place and a 12 month guarantee on our work.*
  • Reviewed by the people we have worked for. 4.9 out of 5 from over 160 Google reviews.

Fencing in Chilwell — Common Questions

Can you clear an overgrown garden and fit the fence in one go?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper than arranging the two separately — one visit, one lot of waste away, one set of access arrangements. We clear first, expose the boundary line, then fit. Clearance is priced on volume and access rather than garden size.

Can you give me a fixed price for a fence I cannot get to?

Not an honest one. Until the line is exposed nobody knows whether the posts are sound or how much fence is actually in there. We will give you a realistic range up front and a firm price once it is clear.

What happens to the waste from a clearance?

It goes to a licensed facility. We are a registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286. That matters — household waste that ends up fly-tipped can be traced back to the address it came from, and the duty of care sits with whoever produced it unless it is passed to a licensed carrier.

Is composite fencing worth it in Chilwell?

On a long rear boundary, usually yes. Composite needs no treatment and holds its colour well past ten years, which suits the long runs common here. Anthracite grey is by far the most requested. It costs more up front and less across a decade.

Where can I take fence panels in Chilwell?

Beeston Recycling Centre, Lilac Grove, NG9 1PF. It is a Nottinghamshire County Council site, so register your vehicle in advance — up to two per household — and arrange a hire van at least 24 hours ahead. Panels cannot go in the brown bin; treated timber is not garden waste.

How much is Broxtowe's garden waste collection?

Around £45 for the first bin and £26 for an additional one, collected fortnightly March to November and monthly December to February. It is one of the better services in the county, but it will not take fencing timber.

How high can I build my fence?

Generally 2 metres at rear and side boundaries, 1 metre where the boundary fronts a highway. Trellis on top counts toward the total. On newer developments near Toton, deed covenants can be stricter than planning rules, so check both.

Do you make side gates to fit?

Yes, built to the opening in our own workshop rather than cut down from stock. Braced and ledged timber, composite or metal, hung on posts sized for the weight of the gate.
