Decking Installers Nottingham

When in comes to decking there are still some choices to be made. The main one being between choosing wood or composite decking, with a lesser know option of concrete decking also available.
Along with the decking itself a raised decking area will need to include
steps, posts and balustrades to prevent falls. The the inclusion of integrated lighting into the decking should also be considered to provide a dawn to dusk, and beyond, practical outdoor area.
We've provided you with a brief overview of some of the decking options below, along with some other aspects to consider when choosing, which type and how much decking to feature in your garden.

Here is are a few photos taken of a timber decking replacement job done in The Park area of Nottingham. First stage was to take out the old timber decking - to be taken to the waste recycling centre and then setting in the new frame.

As you can see we keep the gaps in the joist fairly small to provide a firm base on which to lay the timber deck boards, so they have less chance of flexing and warping over time and you can't bounce on them. It's these little things that can make the difference between a good decking fitter and once which try to keep costs down by taking shortcuts in material and labour.

Timber Decking

This is still the most common material for areas of decking however, many people are not aware that timber decking is available in either hardwood or softwood formats. The first aspect to mention is not to be mislead that the naming refers to the physical hardness of the wood. It simply refers to the specie group from which the tree used to make the decking belongs to. Tree such as beech, ash and oak are part of the hardwood group, while the most common of the softwoods is pine.

Softwood is more commonly used due to its availability and simplicity to fit, which in turn makes it the most cost effective - from an initial install perspective. Whilst pressure treated to protect from insects and funguses, it will need a little more maintenance to maintain it's looks over time. This does however allow you to choose from a variety of stains and oils to create your desired look.

Hardwood Decking

The less common hardwood decking is generally more expensive (even more than composite decking) and is harder to work with thereby increasing its overall installation cost compared to softwood. Hardwood has a natural resistance to insects, fungi and decay and therefore requires less maintenance than softwood. There will be a variety of shades depending on the hardwood chosen and as a more natural product, most will tend to darken over time.

Layered timber deck boards

Depending on footwear decking can become a little slippery when wet - more so with softwood timber. As a result layered timber deck boards have come onto the market as a slip resistant option, where families feel that a non-slip option would be prudent.
The most common extra layer to a timber decking board will either be a thin artificial grass type topping or a layer of rubber.

Plastic Decking Nottingham

UPVC decking:

Massively growing in popularity, composite decking is now becoming the choice for more and more home owners for new or replacement decking along with UPVC decking. Most composite decking is made by combining plastic with wood particles, whereas UPVC decking is made from 100% plastic. There are some differences between the two. Plastic decking is totally impervious to water and has better fade resistant properties however, on particularly hot days the plastic retains heat. The result is that his could make it very hot to stand on in bare feet - especially if you have chosen a darker colour it can expand significantly and frequent contraction and expansions changes can lead to damage of the board. Aesthetically some people feel that they do have 'plastic' look about them even though they are designed with a wood grain effect.

Composite decking Nottingham

Composite decking on the other hand has a much more authentic wood feel - helped by the fact that a large part of the board is made up of wood particles. The wood grain effect look very authentic and with a range of colours can provide a striking decking area along with matching steps and balustrades. The plastic element make the boards water-resistant and much less prone to slips as well as protecting the boards from mould, rot and fungus threats. No treating is required - to clean off spills and outdoor debris a simple, gentle jet wash will have your composite decking looking like new again.

Nottingham decking

This is possibly not decking in its true sense. Concrete decking primarily uses wood effect slabs to create a decking look. Some people would call it paving or creating a 'decking effect patio' rather than real decking. Whilst you won't get the same feel off concrete as wood or composite boards it still can provide a cost effective option in the right areas and circumstances. It is extremely hard wearing and as a paving choice you can still use this in one area of your garden combined with a more traditional decking option in another.
