Fencing and Gates in Long Eaton
Long Eaton is the one place we work that is not in Nottinghamshire. It sits in Erewash Borough, Derbyshire, which changes almost nothing about the fencing and quite a lot about what happens to the old one — more on that further down.
The housing runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the town centre and the old lace factories, through interwar semis, to post-war and modern estates out towards Sawley and Breaston. What ties a lot of it together is the low brick front wall. They were built to mark a line rather than screen a garden, and a great many are still perfectly sound at 60 or 80 years old while doing very little.
Making More of a Wall You Already Have
Rebuilding a wall higher is a bricklaying job with foundations underneath it. Adding to the top of one is not, and there are three ways we do it in Long Eaton.
Decorative wall toppers — laser-cut composite panels in a capped frame, bolted down to the coping. They add height and character without blocking light, and because the pattern is open they let wind through rather than acting as a sail. They also come off again without damaging the brickwork, which matters if you are not certain you will want them in ten years.

The height arithmetic on a front wall
Fence and wall are measured together, from ground level rather than from the top of the wall. A 600mm wall with a 600mm topper on it is a 1.2 metre boundary.
On a front boundary adjoining a highway — and a footpath beside a road counts — permitted development generally allows 1 metre. That does not make a taller boundary impossible, only that it may need permission first. Erewash Borough Council's planning team will confirm your position at no cost, and we would rather you asked than found out afterwards. We are not planning consultants.

This is where being in Derbyshire matters, and Long Eaton is a slightly odd case even within its own borough.
Erewash charges £37 a year for a garden waste subscription and £27.75 for each additional bin, frozen for 2026–27, with an early bird price of around £25 if you sign up before 31 March. That is cheaper than every Nottinghamshire district we work in. You get 20 collections, fortnightly, and the bin needs a valid sticker on it or it will not be emptied. Garden waste goes in loose — not bagged.
Long Eaton has its own dates
Erewash suspends collections over winter, and the two halves of the borough are on different dates. For Long Eaton and the surrounding area, the last collections are in the week beginning 30 November and they restart in the week of 8 March. Ilkeston stops a week earlier and restarts a week earlier.
So there is roughly a three month gap across the middle of winter. Worth knowing if you are planning a clearance for January, and it would not take treated timber in any case.
The recycling centre is Derbyshire County Council's site at Ilkeston, not a Nottinghamshire one, and you need to register your vehicle in advance. If you are used to the Nottinghamshire sites just over the border, do not assume the rules carry across — they are a different authority with their own conditions on DIY waste.
