Clifton is two places with one name. Clifton Village is the old core — older properties, mature gardens and a lot of original red brick boundary walls. The Clifton estate is one of the largest council-built developments in the country, laid out from the 1950s with regular semis, open frontages and rectangular back gardens that back onto each other in long runs.

The estate gardens are straightforward work and benefit from being done properly in one go: closeboard or panel on concrete posts with gravel boards, the whole run at once rather than a bay at a time. The village work is different — often about adding height or privacy to something already standing.

Adding Height to an Existing Wall

If you have a sound brick wall that is simply too low, taking it down and fencing the line is almost always the wrong answer. It is expensive, it makes a mess, and it throws away something that will outlast any fence you replace it with.

The alternative is trellis or railings carried on posts above the wall. Points worth knowing before you commit:

• The wall has to be sound. Bowing, frost-damaged or loose-coped brickwork will not take fixings, and adding a sail on top of a weak wall is a bad idea. We check it before quoting.
• Height is measured from the ground, not from the top of the wall. A 1.2m wall with 900mm of trellis on it is a 2.1m boundary. At a rear or side boundary that is generally still fine; where it fronts a highway the limit is 1 metre in total, and an old village wall may already be at or over it.
• Posts can go behind or through. Fixing to the face of the wall is quicker; setting posts behind it into the ground is stronger and does not put load into the brickwork. Which is right depends on the wall.
• Trellis is not a privacy screen on day one. It becomes one when something grows through it. If you want immediate screening, say so — a solid-topped panel is the honest answer.

Getting Rid of an Old Fence in Clifton

Clifton is Nottingham City, not a county district, and that decides where the old fence can go.

Your tip is Redfield Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Lenton Industrial Estate, NG7 2UJ. It is for Nottingham City residents only and staff may ask for a driving licence as proof of address. Equally, a city address will not get you into the county sites at Beeston or Calverton. No advance vehicle registration is needed for a car, unlike the county centres, but trade waste is not accepted at all.

The garden waste bin will not take fence panels — treated timber is not garden waste. The city subscription is also shorter than people assume: it runs April to December only, fortnightly until October and then a single collection in November and one in December, with nothing from January to March. The fee has been in the mid-thirties since it launched in 2024, reduced to £18.25 for households on council tax support. Garden waste can be taken to Redfield Road free of charge if you would rather not subscribe.

Fence Heights, Permission and Rented Property

Permitted development generally allows 2 metres at a rear or side boundary and 1 metre where the boundary fronts a highway, including a pavement beside a road. Clifton's open-plan estate frontages and the village's roadside walls both sit on that lower limit more often than people expect, and anything added on top counts toward the total.

If you let a property here, Nottingham's Selective Licensing scheme runs to 30 November 2028 — but the current designation is not the same as the previous one and some areas were taken out of it. Check the specific address on the council's licensing pages rather than assuming either way.
