Fencing and Gates in Mansfield
Mansfield covers a lot of ground and the boundaries change with it. Close to the town centre there are Victorian and Edwardian terraces with short rear yards, walls on two sides and access down an entry. Out towards Forest Town, Mansfield Woodhouse and Rainworth the plots open up into post-war and later estate housing with proper garden-length runs, side gates and room to work.

Mansfield District Council runs the bins here, and the brown bin is not the answer. Garden waste is a paid annual subscription running 1 April to 31 March, at roughly twenty collections a year with none at all in January or February. It takes grass, hedge trimmings and prunings. It does not take treated timber, and the council will not collect side waste or make extra collections, so stacking panels beside the bin achieves nothing.
The council's bulky waste collection is a genuine option for a small amount — around £16 for one item, £29 for two or three and £13 for each additional up to ten. For a full boundary of panels, posts and gravel boards it works out expensive and slow.
Before you load up the car
The recycling centres are run by Nottinghamshire County Council, not by Mansfield District, and they class old fencing as DIY waste. That means two 50-litre bags or one item per visit, nothing larger than 2000mm × 750mm × 700mm, and four visits per household in any four weeks. A 6ft panel is over the single-item limit. Vehicles must be registered in advance and a hired van or trailer needs a permit booked 24 hours ahead.
And the rule most people have never heard: Nottinghamshire County Council states that where waste has arisen from work done by a tradesperson, disposal is that tradesperson's legal responsibility. Old panels left on your drive are not a saving you have been passed.

Fence Heights and Permission
Permitted development in England generally allows 2 metres at a rear or side boundary and 1 metre where it fronts a highway, footpaths beside roads included.
Two things catch people out on decorative panels. Trellis counts — a 1.8m panel with 300mm of trellis on top is a 2.1m fence and over the limit, however open the trellis looks. And a gravel board adds to the finished height in the same way. Conservation areas, listed buildings and deed covenants can change the position again. We are not planning consultants; Mansfield District Council's planning team will confirm where you stand at no cost.
