The height limit is lower. Where a boundary fronts a highway — and a pavement beside a road counts — permitted development generally allows 1 metre, not the 2 metres you get at a rear boundary. Anything on top, trellis included, counts toward that. On a corner plot there are usually two highway frontages, and there can be visibility requirements at a junction on top of the height rule. This is the single most common thing people get wrong, and it is the most expensive to get wrong.

The wear is harder. Nobody treats the public face, weeds grow against it, it takes knocks, and it gets weather with nothing in front of it. On a roadside run we would always specify concrete posts and gravel boards, and where a boundary is genuinely exposed, hit-and-miss boarding lets wind through rather than catching it.

Both faces are on show. Closeboard is solid from both sides but the rails show on one. Hit-and-miss and trellis-topped panels look the same either way, which matters when one side is the street.

And on newer estates toward Toton, deed covenants can be stricter than planning law — that is a private matter in your title documents rather than something the council can advise on.
