Top Valley is a planned estate on the northern edge of the city, built out from the 1970s alongside Rise Park and Bestwood. The layout is deliberate — houses grouped around closes, pedestrian paths threading between them, and gardens backing onto each other or onto a footpath rather than a road.
The consequence for fencing is that boundaries here age as a batch. Everything went in at the same time to the same specification, usually timber posts, and it therefore fails on the same schedule. If your neighbours are all replacing theirs, that is why, and it is worth talking to them — a longer run priced together costs less per bay.

Fences on an estate like this almost never fail because of the panels. They fail at the posts, and once the posts start going the rest is only a matter of time.
- Timber posts rot at ground level. Not at the top, not in the middle — exactly where the post meets the soil, where it stays damp and is out of sight. By the time a post moves in the wind it has usually been going for years.
- One post takes its neighbours with it. A panel is fixed at both ends. Lose one post and two panels lose half their support, which puts load onto the next posts along.
- Patching costs more. Replacing three bays this year and three next leaves you with mismatched heights, different timber colours and posts of different ages, and two lots of labour instead of one.
What goes back: concrete posts with concrete gravel boards, every time on this kind of boundary. Nothing at ground level left to rot, the panel timber kept clear of wet soil, and panels that can be lifted out and replaced individually in future without digging anything up. The panel itself — closeboard, lap or composite — is the part you choose on budget and looks. The posts are the part that decides whether you are doing this again in eight years.
Boundaries Onto the Estate Footpaths
A lot of Top Valley gardens back or side onto one of the pedestrian paths that run through the estate, and that boundary needs treating differently from one between two gardens.
- You do not control the far side. Nobody treats the back of it, growth builds up against it, and it takes knocks. Concrete posts and gravel boards are close to essential.
- The height limit may be lower. Where a path is an adopted highway — and many are — the limit is generally 1 metre rather than 2, even though it feels like a rear boundary. Worth confirming with the council before ordering.
- Security is usually the real concern. If that is the point of the job, say so at the survey. There is a difference between a boundary that marks a line and one specified to make access difficult, and it affects height, construction and whether security fencing is the better answer.
Getting Rid of an Old Fence in Top Valley
Top Valley is Nottingham City. Your tip is Redfield Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre, Lenton Industrial Estate, NG7 2UJ — city residents only, ID may be asked for, and no trade waste at all. A city address will not get you into the county sites at Calverton, Hucknall or Beeston, even though Hucknall is closer.
The garden waste bin will not take fence panels — treated timber is not garden waste. The city subscription runs April to December only, fortnightly until October then one collection each in November and December, with nothing from January to March. It is £18.25 for households on council tax support, and garden waste can be taken to Redfield Road free of charge instead.
Worth knowing on a whole-run job
A full boundary replacement produces far more waste than people picture — panels, posts, concrete footings and gravel boards. Nottinghamshire's and the city's limits on DIY waste mean a run of any length is not a car-boot job.
Where waste has come from work carried out by a tradesperson, disposing of it is that tradesperson's legal responsibility, not yours. A contractor who leaves the old fence stacked in the garden has left you with something you cannot legally take to Redfield Road as household waste.
