Closeboard or Hit-and-Miss? An Honest Comparison

This is the decision most Newark customers are actually making, so it is worth setting out properly.

Closeboard — featheredge boards overlapped on rails, giving a solid face. Maximum privacy, maximum shelter, and the cheaper of the two because it uses less timber. The downside on an exposed boundary is that a solid panel is a sail: in a gale the load goes into the posts, and posts are what fail.

Hit-and-miss — boards fixed alternately to each side of the rails, leaving a gap between each one. Wind passes through rather than pushing against it, so it survives weather that flattens solid panels. It looks the same from both sides, which genuinely matters on a shared boundary where neither party wants the rails facing them. It costs more, because you are buying roughly a third more timber. It is not a full privacy screen — from directly side-on you can see through the gaps, though from most angles you cannot.

Our honest rule of thumb: if the boundary is sheltered by other buildings, closeboard. If it backs onto open ground or fields, hit-and-miss. And whichever you choose, put it on concrete posts with gravel boards, because that is what decides how long it lasts.
