Fencing in Mapperley

Fencing, gates and boundary replacement across Mapperley, Mapperley Plains and Porchester — supplied and fitted, or supply only. Narrow side passages are the norm here, so we work in loads that fit down the side of a house rather than needing a driveway to unload onto.

Before & after in Mapperley

A Mapperley Boundary Replaced Down a Narrow Side Access

Most Mapperley properties have a side passage rather than a drive, and it decides how a fence job runs. Materials come in by hand, the old fence goes out the same way, and nothing gets stacked on a driveway in between because there is not one.

Boundary replacement alongside a bungalow

The old boundary out and the strip cleared back. Getting to this point is most of the work on a Mapperley job — everything came down the side of the bungalow by hand, and everything went back the same way.

Closeboard on concrete posts with rock-faced gravel boards, run tight to the building line. The gravel board does two jobs here: it keeps timber off ground that stays damp beside a wall, and it takes up the fall so the panels sit level.

Fencing and Gates in Mapperley

Mapperley runs up the hill from the city out to Mapperley Plains, and the housing changes as it climbs — older terraces and semis lower down toward Porchester and Sherwood, interwar and postwar semis and bungalows higher up, with longer gardens and views over the Trent valley on the ridge.

What most of it shares is a side passage rather than a driveway. That single fact shapes the job more than the length of the run does: panels, posts and gravel boards all come in by hand, the old fence leaves the same way, and there is nowhere to stack anything in between. We work in loads sized for that rather than turning up expecting somewhere to unload.

Supplied and fitted or supply only, and the old boundary leaves with us the same day.

What We Install in Mapperley

Which Council Are You In? It Decides Where the Old Fence Goes

Mapperley straddles a boundary that catches people out constantly. Part of Mapperley is in the City of Nottingham; Mapperley Plains and the streets further out are in Gedling Borough. The two have completely different waste arrangements, and being a few streets apart changes both your tip and your bin service.

  • City side. Your tip is Redfield Road, Lenton Industrial Estate, NG7 2UJ — city residents only, ID may be asked for, no advance vehicle registration for a car. Garden waste subscription runs April to December only, with nothing from January to March.
  • Gedling side. Your tip is Calverton Recycling Centre, Hollinwood Lane, NG14 6NR — a Nottinghamshire County Council site, so you must register your vehicle in advance and arrange a van or trailer permit 24 hours ahead. Garden waste is around £45 a year, April to March, with no collections in January or February.

Neither will let you in on the other's address. If you are not certain which side of the line you are on, your council tax bill settles it.

Either way, the bin is not the answer

Treated timber is not garden waste, so fence panels cannot go in a brown bin under either council. And where waste has come from work carried out by a tradesperson, disposing of it is that tradesperson's legal responsibility, not yours — which matters more than usual on a property with no driveway to leave it on.

We take the old fence away as part of the job — registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286.

Working Down a Narrow Side Access

A side passage changes what is sensible to fit, not just how long the job takes.

  • Concrete posts are heavy. They are still usually the right answer, but where a passage is genuinely tight it is worth discussing at survey rather than discovering on the day.
  • Panels go through on edge. A standard 6ft panel is about 1.83m wide; most passages take that turned on edge. Where they do not, closeboard built in situ is the answer — posts, rails and featheredge boards carried in individually and assembled in the garden.
  • Nowhere to stage materials. We bring what fits and come back, rather than filling the garden with stacked timber for a week.
  • The old fence has to come out the same way. Which is the part people underestimate, and the reason a removal-included price is worth more here than it looks on paper.

None of this is a reason to put a job off. It is a reason to have someone look at the access before quoting, which is what the free measured survey is for.

Fence Heights and Permission

Permitted development generally allows 2 metres at a rear or side boundary and 1 metre where the boundary fronts a highway, including a footpath beside a road. Trellis counts toward the total.

Mapperley's hill matters here too: height is measured from ground level on the higher side, so a fence that looks 1.8m from your garden can be well over 2m from a neighbour's where the ground falls away.

Which planning team to ask depends on which side of the boundary you are on — Nottingham City Council or Gedling Borough Council. Both will confirm free of charge. We are not planning consultants.

Why Choose Nottingham Fencing

We are a local, family-run firm run by founders Adam and Stephen, based on Beechdale Road with over 15 years' experience across the city and the borough. Tight access is normal work for us rather than a reason to load the price, and we will tell you at the survey exactly how materials are getting in.

  • The old fence goes with us. Registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286 — removal and disposal handled properly, nothing left on your drive.
  • Measured before it is priced. The free survey is where we check post centres, ground levels and whether existing bases can be reused — which is what stops a price changing halfway through.
  • Made to measure, not cut down. Gates are built to your opening rather than trimmed from a stock size, so they still swing properly a year later.
  • Supply only if you want it. Happy to just sell you panels, posts, gravel boards and trellis if you are fitting it yourself.
  • Insured and guaranteed. Public liability insurance in place and a 12 month guarantee on our work.*
  • Reviewed by the people we have worked for. 4.9 out of 5 from over 160 Google reviews.

Fencing in Mapperley — Common Questions

Is Mapperley in Nottingham City or Gedling Borough?

Both, depending on the street. Part of Mapperley is in the City of Nottingham and Mapperley Plains and the streets further out are in Gedling Borough. It decides your tip, your garden waste service and which planning team to ask. Your council tax bill settles which one you are in.

Where do I take old fence panels?

City side, Redfield Road on Lenton Industrial Estate, NG7 2UJ — city residents only, ID may be requested. Gedling side, Calverton Recycling Centre on Hollinwood Lane, NG14 6NR — a county site, so register your vehicle in advance and arrange a van permit 24 hours ahead. Neither will admit you on the other's address.

Can you fit a fence if I only have a narrow side passage?

Yes — it is the normal situation in Mapperley. Panels go through on edge, or where they will not fit we build closeboard in situ, carrying posts, rails and boards in individually. We bring materials in loads that suit the access rather than needing somewhere to stage them.

Does tight access cost more?

Not as a surcharge, but it does affect the time on site and sometimes the materials, which is why we would rather look at it than quote blind. Send a photo of the passage with your enquiry and we can be much more accurate.

Why do I need gravel boards?

They keep the timber clear of ground that stays damp, which is where rot starts, and on sloping ground they take up the fall so panels sit level. Beside a building where water runs off a wall they matter even more. Rock-faced concrete boards are what we fit as standard.

How is fence height measured when the ground slopes?

From ground level on the higher side. On Mapperley's hill a fence that measures 1.8m from your garden can be well over 2m from a neighbour's. Anything added on top, trellis included, counts toward the total.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes, the same day, to a licensed facility — registered waste carrier, licence CBDU474286. With no driveway to stack it on, that matters more here than it does elsewhere. Waste from a tradesperson's work is legally their responsibility to dispose of rather than yours.

Do you supply panels without fitting?

Yes — closeboard, featheredge and lap panels, concrete and timber posts, gravel boards and trellis, delivered locally. Check your access first: a standard 6ft panel is about 1.83m wide and has to be turned on edge to get down most Mapperley passages.
