Understanding Fencing

We’ve provided some further information on some of the types of fence panel options you have below, for your fence repairs in Nottingham. However, a no obligation survey and discussion is the best way of knowing what options are best and what the associated costs would be – we’ll keep things simple, straightforward and jargon free.

Types of Fencing

Fences Explained

When deciding on the finish you want there are several key components, which need to be considered.

Fence Posts

These are the probably the most important component. They provide the strength to your fence and only the correct anchoring of these will ensure it will stand the test of time. We always ensure these are set deep into a concrete base in the ground. Ideally concrete posts will last a lifetime and allow different panels to be replaced in the future, should your requirements or tastes change.

Fence Panels | Wooden Fence Panels

Most garden fences are, and historically, made from wood and provide the widest variety of styles and price options. They have a natural look however, even those pre-treated (pressure treatment) will need regular treating, staining or painting if you are to maintain a good look for many years. There are many good paints and stains on the market, which will allow you a much wider selection of colours to suit your taste and garden style. Decorative style such as waves, arched or curved topped wooden fence panels are readily available.
However, as a natural material it is subject to the elements - so summer heat and winter cold can take its toll, especially if you are not on top of your maintenance.

Wooden Fences

Pros:

  • Widest selection of styles
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Natural look
  • Can be finished in many colours
  • Generally, the cheapest option (dependent on designs)

Cons:

  • Require much more maintenance, than other panels
  • As a natural material it is subject to the elements, which can cause more natural movement leading to damage
  • Not as robust as other options and is most likely to require replacing in the future

As material technology advances, more garden jobs are using a composite material. Composite panels can be made up of a variety of materials, again these can vary in price and style. Most aim to be environmentally friendly comprising of materials such as bamboo and recycled materials such as plastic and UPVC. We can even provide made to measure composite gates to match.

Pros:

  • Long lasting
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Look like new for longer

Cons:

  • Much less choice in styles, sizes and colours
  • May have a longer order times

Concrete gravel boards proved a robust option for either a whole panel or, more typically the bottom part of a panel. Installing a concrete gravel board at the bottom of a wooden panel keeps the wood further from the ground which minimises rot and decay caused by moisture damage.
Where the ground either side of the partition is of different heights then a gravel board should be used to provide greater support against the higher ground and protect the wooden panels. The concrete should be at least 2 inches higher than the ground to offer suitable protection.
The weight and rigidity of gravel boards take most of the strain of the panel and provide a strong, solid base for wooden boards.
Alternatively, gravel boards can be stacked to make up the whole panel and provide a hard wearing, strong option. They come in a small selection of finishes with rock faced being the most popular.

Pros:

  • Durable, robust and cheaper option than composite panels
  • Can be used in part with wooden panels
  • Can be painted with exterior masonry pain
  • Ideal as a base panel

Cons:

  • Much less choice in styles, sizes and finishes

The use of metal Aluminium / Steel varies from domestic and commercial contractor applications.
For residential gardens, metal railing is more commonly found in front gardens where an open plan feel is sought; making for an inviting entry into your property where privacy is not sought. In fact an 'open plan' front garden does act as a burglar deterrent due to the visibility of activity from a public road.
Metal is more common in contracting commercial fencing. Metal railings typically comprised of vertical rails mostly with a spike top to protect premises from unwelcome intruders. Short runs of these can be made for wide gaps down the side of a property with matching
decorative metal gates, with locks,  if that is something that would suit your property.

If you want to transform you entrance we can provide made to measure metal driveways gates including, metal framed wooden driveway gates too.

Pros:

  • Durable, robust and cheaper option than composite panels
  • Low maintenance
  • Can be painted to provide a wide variety of colour options
  • Wide number of styles and heights
  • Certain finishes can provide an effective intruder deterrent

Cons:

  • An expensive option
  • Some versions are less aesthetic

Trellises are mainly fitted to the top of a wooden garden panel.
As well as being a decorative, trellises provide some practical uses. Since they are not designed to hold large weights they act as a deterrent for possible intruders to try and climb for fear of collapsing and causing a disturbance. On a lighter note a trellis is ideal for climbing plants to fix themselves to by interweaving into the slats and training up and along; providing an ideal environment to show off your horticultural talents.
A trellis along the top of a panel can provide a softer boundary between you and your neighbour, allowing a better balance of being able to have a chat while still maintaining privacy… should this your desired outcome!
Note: a trellis is still counted as part of your overall wall height as measured from the ground.
Full length trellis' or open slatted panels are becoming more fashionable - to create a separate partition within your garden, which can house a different look and ambience.
Our trellis page provides further options

First thing is to ensure you are replacing or repairing a partition, which is yours before employing fencers in Nottingham. Details can often be found on the deeds to your property and may include some specific details relating to your particular road or estate outside of the general guidelines.
Where your deeds state it is a shared boundary or does not state your boundary responsibility this would infer that it is a shared boundary and responsibility falls to both of you.
Ideally with any boundary work you should notify your neighbour of your intentions, prior to work commencing as a courtesy and to ensure they do not have reason to cause any issues when work commences.
General UK guidance is that you do not require planning permission when your wall or fence height is no more than 2m, in your back garden. Please remember it is ultimately your responsibility to check with your local planning office, if you have any doubts.
If you cannot come to an agreement with your neighbour, especially when you have a shared boundary and you know what you want is within your rights - you can decide to install your own fence within your own property, alongside the existing one.
This may not seem like the ideal outcome but does allow you to be in control of the work and get the look and style you want in your garden.
